Myanmar’s Ministry of Electricity and Energy has announced plans to produce 22 per cent of its electricity from natural gas and coal in the coming five years. Under the National Electricity Master Plan, hydropower will account for 54 per cent of power generation; natural gas and coal for 42 per cent; and renewable energy for 2 per cent, between 2020 and 2021. During 2015-16, hydropower plants produced 59 per cent of power and gas-fired power plants produced 41 per cent.

The nationwide power consumption increased from 6,467 units in 2010-11 to 13,551 units in 2015-16, a 200 per cent increase in five years.
