Myanmar’s Ministry of Transport and Communications has awarded the country’s fourth telecom licence to Myanmar National Tele and Communications (MNTC). MNTC, which is a JV between Viettel, the Star High Public Company and Myanmar National Telecom Holding, has paid $300 million for the licence. However, precise details such as the quantum of spectrum and frequency allocations of the 15-year licence have not yet been disclosed by the authority. MNTC will operate under the Mytel brand name and use the existing telecom infrastructure currently owned by its sister company, MECTel. The operator plans to concentrate on extending 2G, 3G and 4G coverage in rural areas.
