Lao’s Ministry of Energy and Mines has proposed to expand its power grid network in order to sustain the increased energy generation in the country. The ministry plans to install an additional 54 electricity transmission lines and develop 16 substations by 2020. At present, there are 53,000 km of high voltage transmission lines and 53 substations in the country. In addition, Laos is also connected with neighbouring countries through high voltage transmission lines. These comprise 14 lines that transmit power to Thailand, two to Vietnam and Cambodia each, and one transmission line each to China and Myanmar. Going forward, the ministry is also considering developing more renewable energy sources.
