The Indonesian government plans to hand over the management of 20 seaports and 10 airports to private investors in order to reduce expenditure on operating these facilities and using the saved proceeds for building other transportation facilities. The government expects to save $37.06 million per year through this move. The government has already handed over the operation of seaports in Probolinggo, East Java; Bima, West Nusa Tenggara; Sintete, West Kalimantan; and Waingapu, East Nusa Tenggara. The investors were granted concession rights for up to 30 years. Further, the government has signed MoUs with provincial owned enterprises Delta Artha Bahari Nusantara, state-owned port operator Pelabuhan Indonesia (Pelindo) II and Pelindo III to hand over the operation of the four seaports. By 2017, it plans to hand over 15 airports and seaports, which include Komodo airport in East Nusa Tenggara and the Sentani International Airport in Jayapura, Papua.
