The Ministry of Electricity and Energy in Myanmar has issued a notice to Austria-based Andritz, Japan-based Kansai and Myanmar-based Shwe Taung Group’s subsidiary – High Tech Construction Trust – to proceed with the development of the 60 MW Deedoke hydropower project in the Mandalay region. The signing is seen as an important development for the hydropower sector.

Further, the ministry will also sign a notice to proceed with a consortium led by state-owned Électricité de France for the development of the 1,050 MW Shweli-3 hydropower project in Shan State.

Deedoke and Shweli-3 are among the six projects that the ministry is prioritising for development by the private sector in order to meet Myanmar’s energy needs over the short and medium term. Most of the projects have Western sponsors that signed MoUs with the ministry in 2014 or 2015.
