The Brunei Fertilizer Industries Sendirian Berhad has signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) agreement with Germany-based ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions AG to set up an ammonia and urea plant in Brunei. The project entails an investment of $1.3 billion. Thyssenkrupp will provide the equipment and engineering services as well as supervise the construction and commissioning of the plant. The plant will be set up in the Sungai Liang Industrial Park right next to Brunei’s well-established oil and gas industry, and is expected to start commercial production by the first quarter of 2021. It will have a production capacity of 2,200 metric tonnes of ammonia and 3,900 metric tonnes of urea per day. After completion, the plant will use Brunei’s natural gas reserves as feedstock to produce high quality nitrogen fertiliser, mainly for the export market.
